Archbishop Dutton
William Shakespeare in the second act of his play “As you like
it” said: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and woman merely
players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his
time plays many parts”. This is certainly true of Norman Sydney Dutton.
Norman was born in Altringham in the County Palatine of Chester on the
25th day of November 1936 the second son of John Sydney and Lydia
Margaret Dutton. Norman has only one brother Brian who is 2½ years
older than him. On the 17th March 1962 Norman, married the love of his
life, Dorothy Walker-Catchpole at the Hale Methodist Church, Norman met
Dorothy in the early part of 1961 when she went to work at The Record
Electrical Company, where Norman was then employed as the Assistant
Foreman in the Coil Winding Department, they were engaged in the
September of that year and married on St. Patrick’s day the following
March.
T.S.H. Archbishop and Lady Dutton
on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary
Norman and Dorothy, soon started a family, Sandra Christine was born in
February 1963, Philip Stephen John (Phil) in June 1964 and Christopher
David(Chris) in November 1968, they have seven Grandchildren Emma,
Christopher, Benjamin, Joshua, Joseph, Jack and another Benjamin, plus
two beautiful Great Grandchildren Eve and Oscar, all the members of the
family are greatly loved by Norman, who firmly believes that families
should be close to one another. From the age of 5 Norman spent much of
his early years in and out of Hospital, having contracted Bovine TB of
the neck from drinking un pasteurised milk at School, and following one
of his early periods of hospitalisation he got an eye infection, which
caused an ulcer on the sight of his right eye, a condition that caused
scaring, and left Norman with only peripheral vision in that eye. As a
result of the amount of missed schooling when Norman left his primary
school at the age of 10½ he was unable to read or write. Norman was
however, educated at The Bradbury Secondary School in Hale where he was
inspired by some very wonderful and dedicated teachers who encouraged
him to work hard and make up for much of his lost time, on leaving
school at the age of 15 without any formal qualifications, Norman found
employment as an apprentice Electrical Instrument Maker at The Record
Electrical Company. He continued to work for the company for 14 years.
He later joined Ryaland Pumps Limited as a Contracts Engineer, and was
soon promoted to the position of Spares and Service Manager a position
that held for some 12 years, until he was made redundant. After two
further redundancies Norman studied as a Chiropodist and opened his own
practice, which he continued until reachin retirement age at 65.
At the tender age of 8 Norman joined the Scout Movement, as a Wolf Cub,
at the age of 11 he became a Scout, then at 15 he became what was then
known as a Senior Scout, and before joining the Rover Scouts, at the
age of 18 he had gained his Queen’s Scout Award. As a Leader Norman
served the movement as a Cub Scout Leader, Scout Leader, Group Scout
Leader, Camp Warden, District Commissioner and Leader Trainer, Norman
ended his active involvement with the movement in 1980 after almost 36
years. Norman received the Scout Associations Long Service Award, The
Medal of Merit and the Silver Acorn, the movements second highest award
for service, as Norman says “he once joined the Scouts but he did not
like it so he only stayed for 36 years”.
Norman was for many years actively involve in the Amateur Theatre as a
member of a number of societies taking part in many productions over
the years, before turning professional and becoming a member of the
British Actors Equity, the Actors Union, he played in numerous
Television productions mainly as a supporting artist.
Archbishop Dutton in older age
In the church, Norman was first Ordained as a Minister of the Gospel in
1972 and was actively involved in Non-stipendiary Ministry with a local
Independent Baptist Church, at the same time he was working for his
living. Following a preaching visit to America in 1997 Norman was
re-ordained sub-conditione, and received into full membership of
The Anglican Independent Communion.
The late Bishop Peter A. Compton-Caputo, Consecrated Norman as a Bishop
at St. Paul’s Church at Annapolis in the State of Maryland, in October
1999. Norman was later elected by the unanimous decision of the
Bishops, Priests and Deacons as the Metropolitan Archbishop of the
Worldwide Communion, at Birmingham, England, on All Saints Day the 1st
November 2003. Norman retired from this high office in July 2007 after
steering the Communion through the period of its massive growth.
However Norman soon returned to active service when he was reluctantly
persuades to found The Anglican Episcopal Church International as a
safe haven for the many disenfranchised and disillusioned Bishops,
Priests and Deacons from within his former jurisdiction and from other
Anglican denominations.
Again William Shakespeare in Act 2 of his play, Twelfth Night said,
“Some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some have
greatness thrust upon them”. Norman has achieved many things in
his life, by shear hard work, but of all the things, that he has done,
Norman would like it best of all to be remembered as a loving Husband,
Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and a loyal friend.
