THE ORTHODOX & CHRISMATION
(FOR USE BY BISHOPS)
UNITED ROMAN-RUTHENIAN CHURCH
In Liturgical English with Latin Options
Note: This ritual is only for use in the case of individuals who are
already baptized but were not baptized in the form accompanied by
chrismation. In the event that the general Orthodox form of baptism and
chrismation of the United Roman-Ruthenian Church or of another church
using a similar form was used before baptizing the individual, then
this form may not be used, For to do so would be to repeat the
sacrament. If there is any doubt, however, whether the person has been
chrismated or not, this form is appropriate to use as conditional
chrismation.
PREPARATORY RITES
¶
The Bishop vests in full liturgical vestments in white or gold, or
optionally in pontifical dress, specifically cope, stole, and mitre.
The pastoral staff may be used in the usual manner according to
rubrics, and may be held by an attendant.
¶ Upon the day appointed, all that are to be chrismated shall stand in
order before the Bishop, who is sitting at the faldstool before the
altar. The confirmands should be dressed appropriately to received the
anointing (see below).
¶ The Rector of the Parish or other priest or minister shall say:
RIGHT REVEREND (or Most Reverend or Most Eminent or Most Holy) Father
in God, I present unto you these persons to receive the Holy
Chrismation.
¶ Then the Bishop, still sitting at the faldstool with mitre and crosier, or some Minister appointed by him, may say,
HEAR the words of the Evangelist Saint Luke, in the eighth Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.
WHEN the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: who, when
they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy
Ghost: for as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then laid they their hands on
them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
¶ Then the Bishop stands, holding his hands outstretched over the candidates, and shall say (not sing):
MAY the Holy Spirit come upon you, and may the power of the Most High keep you from sin.
R: Amen.
¶ Next he extends his hands and sings in the solemn tone:
Let us pray.
ALMIGHTY everlasting God, who once didst give new life to these
servants of ours by water and the Holy Spirit, forgiving them all their
sins; send forth upon them from heaven thy Holy Spirit, the Advocate,
along with His sevenfold gifts.
R: Amen.
¶ Then he continues in solemn tone:
Bishop: The Spirit of wisdom and understanding.
R: Amen.
Bishop: The Spirit of counsel and fortitude.
R: Amen.
Bishop: The Spirit of knowledge and piety.
R: Amen.
FILL them with the Spirit of holy fear, and seal them with the sign of
the cross of Christ, in token of everlasting life. We ask this
through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and
reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God,
world without end.
R: Amen.
QUESTIONING
¶ Then shall the Bishop sit at the faldstool and say:
DO
ye here, in the presence of God, and of this congregation, renew the
solemn promise and vow that ye made, or that was made in your name, at
your Baptism; ratifying and confirming the same; and acknowledging
yourselves bound to believe and to do all those things which ye then
undertook, or your Sponsors then undertook for you?
¶ And every one shall audibly answer together: I do.
¶ Then shall the Bishop say:
DO ye promise to follow Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour?
¶ And every one shall audibly answer together: I do.
¶ Then shall the Bishop stand and sing:
V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord;
R. Who hath made heaven and earth.
V. Blessed be the Name of the Lord;
R. Now and forever more.
V. Lord, hear our prayer.
R. And let our cry come unto thee.
Let us pray.
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who hast vouchsafed to regenerate these
thy servants by Water and the Holy Ghost, and hast given unto them
forgiveness of all their sins; Strengthen them, we beseech thee, O
Lord, with the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, and daily increase in them
thy manifold gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and ghostly strength, the spirit of knowledge and
true godliness; and fill them, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy
fear, now and for ever.
R: Amen.
LAYING ON OF HANDS
¶
Then all of them in order standing before the Bishop, he shall sit at
the faldstool (or else stand in front of them in their positions, if
this is more convenient) and lay his hand upon the head of every one
severally, saying (not singing):
DEFEND,
O Lord, this thy Child with thy heavenly grace; that he may continue
thine for ever; and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit more and more,
until he come unto thy everlasting kingdom.
R. Amen.
ANOINTING
¶
Then, once the Bishop has laid hands on all candidates, he shall take
off the episcopal gloves (if he is in pontifical dress and wearing the
gloves) and replace the ring. Then shall each candidate again come
before the Bishop, sitting at the faldstool (or shall the Bishop stand
before each candidate in their place if more convenient). Then shall
the Bishop say, as he anoints with the anointing brush the forehead
anointing forehead, eyes, nostrils, lips, ears, breast, hands, and
feet, saying at each instance):
The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
THE WASHING / ABLUTION
The Bishop gently wipes off chrism from the newly baptized.
Then the Bishop strikes the confirmed lightly on the cheek with the first and second fingers of the right hand, saying:
PEACE be with thee.
After which the episcopal ring is presented to be kissed.
¶ After all have been chrismated, the Bishop rises and sings the following:
R. And grant us thy salvation.
V. Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto thee.
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
¶ Then shall the Bishop turn to the altar and say the Lord's Prayer,
the People repeating it with him. It may be recited or sung in the tone
as given below (tone as in the Daily Offices).
OUR Father...
¶ Then the Bishop continues in the solemn tone.
O GOD, who didst give to thine apostles the Holy Spirit,
ordaining that they and their successors should hand down that Gift to
the rest of the faithful; look with favor on our lowly service, and
grant that the same Holy Spirit may come upon these persons whose brow
we have anointed with holy chrism and sealed with the sign of the holy
cross. May their hearts be consecrated as a worthy dwelling for thy
glory. We ask this in thy name, who livest and reignest with the Father
and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
R: Amen.
¶ Then shall the Bishop sing in the solemn tone.
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who makest us both to will and to do those
things which are good, and acceptable unto thy Divine Majesty; We make
our humble supplications unto thee for these thy servants, upon whom,
after the example of thy holy Apostles, we have now laid our hands, to
certify them, by this sign, of thy favour and gracious goodness towards
them. Let thy fatherly hand, we beseech thee, ever be over them; let
thy Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge
and obedience of thy Word, that in the end they may obtain everlasting
life; through our Lord Jesus Christ, who with thee and the same Holy
Spirit liveth and reigneth ever, one God, world without end.
R: Amen.
O
ALMIGHTY Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to
direct, sanctify, and govern, both our hearts and bodies, in the ways
of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments; that, through thy
most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body
and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
R: Amen.
¶
Then the Bishop shall turn towards the candidates, who remain standing,
and shall bless the candidates with the hands or with the hand blessing
cross only, saying (not singing):
THE Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Ghost, be upon you, and remain with you for ever.
R. Amen.
