Apostolic succession is the continuity of the episcopal ministry through consecration from the Apostles and their successors. In Orthodox and Catholic understanding, it belongs within the continuity of the Church’s faith, sacramental life, and communion, not merely within a list of names.

Sacramental character

Bishops receive the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders through the laying on of hands by bishops who themselves stand in succession. Priests and deacons share in ordained ministry through their relation to the episcopate.

Faith and communion

A valid lineage is not treated as permission to invent a private church or doctrine. Apostolic ministry is ordered toward preserving the apostolic faith, celebrating the sacraments, teaching, governing, and maintaining the unity of the faithful.
