The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is the principal indigenous Christian church of Egypt and a member of the Oriental Orthodox communion. It traces its foundation traditionally to Saint Mark the Evangelist.

Leadership and worship

The church is led by the Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark. Its Alexandrian liturgical inheritance is celebrated principally in Coptic and Arabic, together with languages of the diaspora.

Spiritual heritage

Coptic Christianity has made enduring contributions through monasticism, martyrdom, theology, iconography, fasting, and the preservation of an ancient Egyptian Christian culture.
