The Greek Orthodox tradition is the Hellenic expression of Eastern Orthodox Christianity associated with the ancient patriarchates, the Byzantine Empire, Greece, Cyprus, and a worldwide diaspora.
Language and worship
The tradition preserves the Byzantine Rite and a theological vocabulary deeply shaped by Greek Scripture, the Church Fathers, the Ecumenical Councils, hymnography, and iconography.
Churches
“Greek Orthodox” does not denote a single worldwide jurisdiction. It includes the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Church of Greece, the Church of Cyprus, and other churches and dioceses sharing Greek ecclesiastical heritage.
