Curial office for liturgical order and practice

The Prefecture of the Liturgy is the curial office responsible for ensuring that liturgical practice accords with Canon Law, Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the good of the faithful.

Proposed liturgical changes that do not originate with the Supreme Pontiff or his immediate delegate are reviewed by this Prefecture before being recommended for pontifical approval. The office therefore supports both legitimate liturgical diversity and continuity with the received worship of the Church.

Although it retains the rights and privileges of a prefecture, it is a subordinate congregation of the Prefecture of Faith and Doctrine. If the liturgical prefecture is vacant, that superior prefecture may exercise its responsibilities.
