The sacraments, or Holy Mysteries, are sacred actions through which the Church celebrates and communicates the grace of God.
The sevenfold enumeration
Catholic and later Orthodox teaching often enumerates seven: baptism, chrismation or confirmation, Eucharist, penance or confession, anointing of the sick, Holy Orders, and matrimony. Eastern Christianity also stresses that the whole liturgical and sacramental life of the Church is mysterious and grace-bearing.
Ecclesial life
Sacraments are not private magical acts. They belong to the Body of Christ and unite visible signs, prayer, apostolic ministry, faith, and the action of the Holy Spirit.
