Cleric ordained or appointed to the subdiaconate
A Sub-Deacon is a cleric who serves between the Minor Orders and the diaconate in traditions that retain the subdiaconate. Liturgically, the Sub-Deacon assists at the altar, prepares sacred vessels and books, and supports the Deacon and Priest according to the rite being celebrated.
The United Roman-Ruthenian Church preserves the subdiaconate within its diverse Orthodox and Catholic heritage. Its exact sacramental classification has varied historically among Christian traditions, but within Roman-Ruthenian discipline it is a recognized clerical order with duties established by Canon Law and liturgical custom.
A Sub-Deacon remains subject to ecclesiastical discipline and may receive further ordination to the diaconate. The office should not be confused with that of a lay server who temporarily performs similar ceremonial functions.
