Noble status without a substantive title

Untitled nobility consists of persons and families possessing noble status without holding a substantive title such as Baron, Viscount, Count, Marquis, Duke, or Prince. The distinction is familiar in many European systems, where nobility and title are related but not identical.

Within the Roman-Ruthenian patrimonial tradition, the status may arise through hereditary recognition, lawful grant, or membership in a family whose nobility is established under the applicable law. It is distinct from a courtesy designation and from a personal chivalric award.

In Roman-Ruthenian protocol, an untitled noble is generally styled Excellency unless entitled to a higher style by another office or dignity. Untitled hereditary nobles may qualify for hereditary membership in the Roman-Ruthenian Nobility Association.
