THE SACRED COLLEGE OF CARDINALS
OF THE UNITED ROMAN-RUTHENIAN CHURCH

The College of Cardinals of the United Roman–Ruthenian Church serves as the senior council of the Holy Apostolic See, as well as the senior-most section of the Patriarchal Chapter, assisting the Roman-Ruthenian Pope in matters of doctrine, governance, and the long-term stewardship of the Church’s spiritual and temporal patrimony. Drawn from among bishops and senior clerics of distinguished service, learning, and fidelity, the Cardinals represent the continuity of apostolic governance and the collective wisdom of the Church. For the lower Cardinal ranks (see below), they may also be chosen from the younger Roman-Ruthenian clergy, formed early in service to the Holy Apostolic See and matured through proximity to its sacred offices. Their office is not honorary alone, but advisory, deliberative, and juridical in character. Cardinals are often entrusted with various offices in the Roman-Ruthenian Curia and Pontifical Court.

In accordance with the ancient tradition and Canon Law of the United Roman-Ruthenian Church, members of the College of Cardinals also bears responsibility for ensuring the orderly continuity of the Holy Apostolic See. In the event of a vacancy of the See, the Cardinals each are Pontifical Electors by right. They, along with other appointed Electors in the Pontifical Court, elect or confirm a new Prince-Bishop of Rome-Ruthenia, an office that is both semi-hereditary and semi-elective.

Above all, the dignity of Cardinal signifies a spiritual obligation and a bond of trust with the Roman-Ruthenian Pope. Inherent with the office is a solemn obligation to place service, loyalty, and the good of the Church above personal, regional, or partisan interests.
