The Pontifical Institute of Heraldry is the Roman-Ruthenian institution concerned with heraldic design, review, certification, genealogy, and related questions of titles and insignia.

Heraldic work

The Institute promotes coherent heraldic practice and assists with the design and interpretation of arms. Ecclesiastical heraldry uses external ornaments—such as hats, cords, tassels, crosses, mitres, and keys—to indicate office or rank according to applicable custom.

Genealogy and titles

Its work may include documentary review of genealogical and titulary claims within the scope of the Pontifical Court. Certification records findings or recognition within that jurisdiction; it should not be confused with civil-government recognition in an unrelated state.
